Butter London Nail Foundation

Deborah Lippmann's Supermodel is notorious for leaving a visible nail line (VNL).  There are many other amazing nail polishes that have a "squishy" quality to them but are sheer, such as the ones in the OPI Texas collection, and the Revlon Just Tinted collection.  Those are all jellies, but VNL can be seen with other sheer nail polishes too, such as shimmery lacquers.  For those who haven't experienced this, VNL is when you can see where your finger ends through the tip of your nail (or free edge), because the nail polish you used is too sheer, and there is a "line" that shows where the nail bed ends.  Now that can easily be fixed, and here I brought you a comparison using Supermodel.  The basecoat I'm using today is a ridgefiller and it has a little bit of tint, and at two coats it covers VNL.  Most importantly, it doesn't alter the color you apply over it.  The shade of your nail polish will remain the same, as you will see in these pictures.  If you just want to use it as a basecoat to protect your nails you only need one coat.  As with all Butter London products, this is 3F (Free of Formaldehyde, Toluene, and Dibutyl Phthalate) which is an added bonus!  Edit:  I have been told that you can franken your own basecoat for jellies with some beige added to a ridgefiller.  I tried this with Nailtek Foundation II and it didn't really work too well.  I prefer BL, even though it takes a bit longer to dry.  Also, I think that for bright neon jellies, OPI Funny Bunny or any other sheer white will work too.

  1. Wow..Very cool!
    did not know that foundation!
I really liked your post hj! =D

  2. It makes such a huge difference! Great review and demonstration! :D

  3. @ Rafaa C.: thank you! I didn't know either, I learn new things everyday here :)

@ I Drink Nail Polish: yes, a big difference, yet, the color doesn't change, which is what I love. Thanks! I'm so glad you found it helpful.

  4. I really love BL nail foundation - it's my favorite base coat & I really like how it's a ridge filler but not all thick and streaky. I happened to pick it up on a whim (part of a set, my first BL purchase) based on a suggestion of a Sales Associate & it's become the base coat I compare all others to. Nice to see a nailvet also approves.

  5. that's fantastic - i keep getting ridge fillers etc to reduce vnl and none of them are opaque enough - thank you!!!

  6. @ Filling the Void: wow nailvet? I've never heard that term before (I like it!) thanks! It really solves a major problem for us who love sheer nail polishes. Thanks for adding that it is not streaky at all, I forgot to mention it <3

@ Nail Polish Anon: you're very welcome! The dreaded VNL is a thing of the past thanks to this!

  7. I didn't even know there's such thing as nail foundation! :D

  8. @ Sandra: Glad to inform my readers!

  9. I really like this base coat and often use it when swatching. Unfortunately, it does not help my polish adhere well and I find that my manis chip fast when I use it. :( I'm glad that you like it, though!
